What is Google Analytics and why is it important to setup Google Analytics?
Google Analytics is Google’s free enterprise analytical set of tools which allow you to gather metrics for your website including things like:
- The number of users visiting your website and the times of day they visit.
- How much time are they spending on your website and what pages are they visiting the most.
- Where users are being referred to your site from (whether or it is direct traffic, search engine traffic, social media traffic, etc.) which helps you measure return on advertising investment.
- What location your user is from.
- What device and browser your user is using to visit your website.
- What keywords were used to search that lead them to your website if they were referred by search engine.
All of these metrics allow you to fully understand who your audience is and what they are looking for so you can produce more high quality content that they actually want to read.
How Do I Setup Google Analytics?
The first thing you need to do to setup Google Analytics for your website or blog is to get a Google Analytics account. You can start the process by visiting the following link:
You’ll need to login with your Google/Gmail account. If you don’t have one, you’ll need to create one.
Once logged in with your Google account, click Sign Up to start using Google Analytics.
Setup your account by creating an account name and put in your website URL. Select your industry category, time zone and data sharing settings.
When completed, click the Get Tracking ID button to complete the setup.
At this point you’ll be given a Google Tracking ID and a piece of tracking code which is required to be added to your website in order for Google Analytics to start collecting metrics for your website.
How to Add Google Analytics Tracking Code to Your WordPress Website
The easiest way to add Google Analytics tracking code to your website is by using a WordPress Plugin. We are going to be using the MonsterInsights WordPress Plugin to accomplish this task. There is both a free and a paid version of MonsterInsights.
The free version of MonsterInsights allows you to easily add Google Analytics Tracking Code to your website. The paid version has various advanced features that you can check out here. Some of the premium version features include Ecommerce tracking, Author tracking, Post Type tracking, Ads tracking, Google AMP tracking, Performance optimization, etc.
If you decide you want or need some of the advanced features that the paid version of MonsterInsights has to offer, you can follow these instructions on how to download and install MonsterInsights premium.
If you already have the MonsterInsights lite version of the plugin on your website and want to upgrade to the premium , you can follow these instructions to complete the upgrade.
If you just need the basic Google Analytics functionality offered by the lite version, you can download MonsterInsights lite from the WordPress Plugin directory from within your WordPress Dashboard.
From your WordPress Dashboard, click on Plugins, then click on Add New. In the Search Box enter “MonsterInsights” and you should see Google Analytics for WordPress by MonsterInsights show up in the search results.
Click Install Now, then when installation is completed click Activate. At this point you should see the MonsterInsights plugin listed in your active plugins within your WordPress Dashboard.
There should now be a new menu available within your WordPress Dashboard called “Insights”. When you click on it, it will take you to the General tab of your MonsterInsights settings. The first thing you will want to do is Authenticate MonsterInsights with your Google Account.
Click the Authenticate button and it will take you to your Google Analytics sign in page. After signing in you will need to allow MonsterInsights access to your Google Analytics account.
Click Allow and on the next page click Complete Authentication. At this point within your WordPress Dashboard you should see it say Profile Active and it will have your Google Tracking ID next to it.
That’s it, you’ve successfully added Google Analytics tracking to your website. The MonsterInsights plugin will handle adding the tracking code to every page on your website. Remember, that it can take as long as 24-48 hours before Google Analytics begins capturing metrics on your site so if you are looking at reports and don’t see data it doesn’t mean that it is not working properly.
How To View Google Analytics Reports
You can view Google Analytics data both in your Google Analytics account as well as directly in your MonsterInsights plugin within your WordPress dashboard.
To view reports within your WordPress dashboard, just click on Insights and then click on reports.
You can also log back into your Google Analytics account to view reports directly once Google begins capturing data.
